Where the Sea Meets the Sky

Crossing the plains of Lika
Velebit mountains, like a spine to my right, heading south to Gospić
There is a big tunnel near Sveti Rok.

The longest tunnel in Croatia
I believe
Out of the tunnel on the other side
You see the sea for the first time.
It never gets old.

The Bristol Blue, azure.
It’s a little hazy today
You have to look deep to find the gems.
The emerald greens of Lika give way to the sapphire
Ponds of sunlight
On the horizon
Sea meets sky

Where the threshold is blurred
the sea goes on forever

I wrote this last week my way from the capital to the coast with a long list of preparations.

And now, the work is done, the pages written, and it’s time to head north. Tomorrow at 8 AM, Petra and I will cast off from the harbor on the island Murter and sail Vinka—our freshly painted, lovingly restored Komiža-built open boat beauty—ninety miles up the coast. The winds will guide us, the coastline will unfold, and the sea will carry us forward. Just the two of us and Vinka, cruising through the Kvarner blue, bound for Rab

There’s a special kind of quiet before a voyage begins. The gear is packed, the boat is ready, and the sea waits patiently. As we head into the blue, I carry these words, these views of Lika, and this sense of purpose. Because every sail north is also a journey inward—toward connection, discovery, and the endless horizon where the sea meets the sky.

5 days till the Feliks Arba Expedition.
